Every year marine two-stroke motors (which are used on most PWCs) spill 15 times more oil and fuel into waterways than did the Exxon Valdez.
25% percent of the fuel and required oil that conventional two-strokes use, most of it unburned, is emitted directly into the water and air.
Methyl tertiary-Butyl Ether (MTBE) is a
fuel additive that is a major water pollution source (mainly because it moves
farther and faster than others). It is considered a possible carcinogenic and
contains tertiary butyl-alcohol (TBA) and formaldehyde . TBA is listed as
"harmful or fatal if swallowed" by the EPA. One jetski dumps one-tenth
of a gallon (a soda can) of MTBE into the water in two hours--enough to
contaminate 13 million gallons of drinking water, or the amount consumed daily
by a population of 90,000--with 5 ppb of MTBE.
Remember Lake Whatcom is the source of Bellingham's drinking water!
